Device for peeling elongated peeling goods (0001) This present invention relates to a device for peeling elongated peeling goods which comprises a number of transport units for moving the peeling goods in a transport direction and a number of cutter units for peeling said goods wherein the transport units and the cutter units are in the transport direction tandem arranged in alternating order, wherein a transport unit has at least two transport rollers in contact with the peeling goods to guide said latter, wherein at least one of the transport rollers is coupled with a drive unit for rotating said roller around a rotational axis that is perpendicular to the transport direction, wherein the transport rollers are movable sideways relative to the transport direction and cross to the rotational axis such that an adjusting movement thereof may be effected in a transverse direction to cope with varying thicknesses and/or diameters of the peeling goods, and wherein each of the cutter units comprises two cutter knives each extending on opposite sides of a transport axis along which the peeling goods are guided.
(0002) Prior known from WO 2004/030474 A1 is a device for peeling elongated peeling goods which comprises a number of cutter units and transport units tandem arranged in alternating order. Each of said cutter units is provided with two cutter knives extending on both sides of a transport axis along which the peeling goods are guided by the transport units. Each of the transport units comprises two transport rollers of which at least one is coupled with a drive unit. These transport rollers are arranged to move cross to a transport direction and cross to a rota tional axis around which the transport roller rotates such that an adjusting movement thereof may be effected to cope with varying thicknesses and/or diameters of the peeling goods. This prior art device which has been performing with basically good results so far is provided with elongated cutter knives mounted in a separate suspension means that can be swung around a rotational axis extending parallel to the transport direction. This means that this prior known peeling device requires relatively much space. In addition, peeling is restricted to a defined diameter range of the peeling goods.
(0003) It is an object of this present invention to improve a device for peeling elongated peeling goods in such a way that universal peeling of peeling goods having different thicknesses will be possible with reduced mounting space only involved.
(0004) According to the invention this object is achieved in that the cutting knives are assigned to just one transport roller in each case and are adapted to rotate around a rotational axis of the respective transport roller .
(0005) The particular advantage of the invention resides in that a constantly good peeling result can be obtained for peeling goods within a relatively vast diameter range. This is achieved by having the cutter knives aligned on just one axis and/or pivot of the transport roller. The cutter knife always has the same distance from the rotational axis and/or pivot of the transport roller independent of the position and/or transverse orientation of the transport roller. The blades of the cutter knife may hence have the same optimal orientation relative to the peeling goods irrespective of what diameter of the material may be involved. The peeling device of this invention permits to peel relatively thin and relatively thick peeling goods, i.e. goods within a relatively vast diameter range.
(0006) According to a preferred embodiment of this invention is the cutter knife provided with a curved knife holder along an acute angle that extends around the transport roller in circumferential direction. This affords the advantage that a circular movement of the knife blade around the rotational axis of the transport roller can take place irrespective of what transverse movement of the transport roller out of the transport axis may be involved .
(0007) A modification of the invention provides for the cutter knife holder to be rigidly connected to a lever that is linked to the pivot of the transport roller and that serves as a hinge which in coaction with the curved knife holder ensures a constant spacing of the knife blade from the rotational axis of the transport roller at all time. This means that in case of transverse movement of the transport roller relative to the transport axis there is no change of the radial position of the knife blade and/or the cutter knife relative to the associated transport roller. Said radial position of the cutter knife is always the same relative to the associated transport irrespective of what peeling material thickness may be handled.
(0008) According to another modification of this present invention a pair of transport rollers and a pair of cutter knives are forming one peeling module and several such peeling modules are arranged under offset angles in the transport direction for complete and overall peeling of the material. The compactness of the device according to the invention is increased due to the fact that two peeling modules are coupled with just one drive unit via a coupling unit. Mounting space requirements are hence reduced by a lesser extent of drive equipment.
(0009) Another modification of the invention provides for the cutter knives to be in a spring tensioned arrangement to make them force the knife blade against the peeling goods with a predetermined force at all time.
(0010) Further advantages of this invention are as disclosed in the subclaims.
(0011) One exemplary embodiment of the invention will now be described in closer detail with reference to the accompanying drawings.

(0014) Figure 2 is a front view of the peeling device .
(0015) Figure 3 is a side view of a peeling module comprising a pair of transport rollers and a pair of cutter knives in a home or starting position.
(0016) Figure 4 is a side view of the peeling module according to Figure 3 in a peeling position in which the peeling material has been grasped by opposite transport rollers.
(0017) Figure 5 is a side view of the peeling module in a peeling position in which a forward portion of the peeling material grasped by the transport rollers is being peeled by the cutter knives and (0018) Figure 6 is a side view of the peeling module in which the transport rollers are again pulled together and a rear portion of the material only is being peeled.
(0019) A device of this invention for peeling elongated goods such as cucumbers, carrots, zucchinis, radish, asparagus etc. has four peeling modules 1, 2, 3, 4 which are arranged under offset angles in a transport direction T of a peeling material 5.
(0020) Each of the peeling modules consists of a transport unit 6 to transport peeling goods 5 in the transport direction T and a cutter unit 7 to peel the goods 5 that is in the transport direction T arranged downstream the transport unit 6. The first peeling module 1 and the second peeling module 2 on one side as well as the third peeling module 3 and the fourth peeling module 4 on the other side are each forming one peeling module pair 8 and/or 9 that is connected to a drive unit 11 via a coupling means 10 .
(0021) This coupling mean 10 is provided with driving belts for non-rotatable connection of a drive shaft of an electric motor type drive unit 11 to a driving pulley 14. Said driving pulleys are non-rotatably coupled with the transport roller pairs 15 of the transport unit 6 such that said transport rollers 15 are enabled to pivot around a swivel axis S that extends perpendicular to the transport direction T to bring them from a home position according to Figure 3 into a transport position as shown in Figures 4 and 5. This makes the transport rollers move outward cross to the transport direction T and/or cross to a transport axis A along which the peeling material 5 is advanced and to an extent as required for a given thickness of the peeling material 5.
(0022) Extending on both sides of the electric motor 11 are the driving belts 12 which each connect the 90° offset driving pulleys 14 of adjacent peeling modules 1, 2 and/or 3, 4 of said peeling module pairs 8, 9. This is why the second peeling module 2 of the first peeling module pair 8 is arranged under a 90° offset angle relative to the first peeling module 1 of that same peeling module pair 8, and the fourth peeling module 4 of the second peeling module pair 9 is as well disposed under a 90° offset angle relative to the third peeling module 3 of that same peeling module pair 9. Said peeling module pairs 8, 9 are mounted under a 45° offset relative to the transport axis A such that four parallel cuts are performed under 90° offset angle as the peeling material 5 passes through the peeling device.
(0023) The coupling means 10 preferably comprises a gear unit with a defined gear ratio such that both transport rollers 15 of the transport unit 6 may preferably rotate around a rotational axis D1 and/or D2 thereof. The transport units 6 and the cutter units 7 of the peeling modules 1, 2, 3, 4 are each identical and just arranged under an offset angle relative to each other.
(0024) The cutter units 7 are each provided with two cutter knives 16 which extend on opposite sides of the transport axis A in the transport direction T downstream the transport rollers 15 of the transport unit 6. One cutter knife 16 is assigned to each transport roller 15. The cutter knife 16 is fitted with a knife blade 17, a curved knife holder 18 and a lever 19 which is non-rotatably connected to said knife holder 18. The lever 19 has a joint element 20 which is axially offset relative to the transport roller 15 and that is rotatably mounted on pivots Dl, D2 of the respective transport rollers 15 via a hinge unit. Said joint element 20 has a radial length which is greater than a radial distance of a circumferential surface 21 of the transport roller 15 from the rotational axis D1 and/or D2. Juxtaposed to the joint element 20 is an extension element 22 of the lever 19 which is non-rotatably connected to the curved knife holder 18.
(0025) The free end of the knife holder 18 carries a knife blade 17 mounted on the knife holder 17 in a customary way to swing around an axis which is parallel to the rotational axis Dl, D2. Since the knife holder 18 is rigidly attached to the lever 19 and said lever 19 is rotatable around said axis D1 and/or D2 the knife blade 17 is always in the same radial position relative to its associated transport roller 15. The upper cutter knife 16 is with reference to the transport axis A assigned to the upper transport roller 15 and the lower cutter knife 16 to the lower transport roller 15 In this exemplary embodiment .
(0026) A distance r of the knife blade 17 from the rotational axis Dl, D2 is hence independent of the thickness of the peeling material 5 and independent of the position of the transport rollers 15 in the transverse direction Q.
(0027) The knife holder 18 is curved and/or arcuate and extends along an acute angle in circumferential direction of the respective transport roller 15.
(0028) The cutter knife 16 mounted on the pivot Dl, D2 is preferably spring tensioned such that the knife blade 17 can contact the peeling goods 5 with a predetermined pressure at all time.
(0029) The transport units 6 of the peeling modules 1, 2, 3, 4 arranged in tandem as viewed in the transport direction are spaced apart in such a way that the peeling material 5 is grasped by the in transport direction T leading transport unit 6 as the transport rollers 15 thereof are swung into working position while the in transport direction T trailing transport unit 6 of the adjacent peeling module still holds the material 5 to be peeled. Dropout of the peeling goods 5 between any of the peeling modules 1, 2, 3, 4 is prevented this way. The transport units 6 hence serve to guide the peeling goods 5 in transport direction T.
(0030) As will be seen from Figure 4 the transport roller pair 15 is swung outward in a transverse direction Q as the peeling material 5 is grasped. At the same time are the cutter knives 16 swung inward around the rotational axis Dl, D2 of the respective transport rollers in the arrow direction 13 such that they still take a central and/axial position relative to the peeling material 5. Subsequently, the material 5 is peeled by the cutter knives 16 while being advanced in the transport direction T until the in that direction T rearmost end is reached. The spring tensioned transport rollers 15 swing together again before completion of the peeling cut with a junction point V between knife holder 18 and lever 19 again being moved into an outer home position which it had initially taken as shown in Figure 3. Peeling the material 5 can be continued after transfer to the in transport direction T foremost peeling module 1 with under offset angle.
(0031) According to a not-shown alternative embodiment the transport rollers may be in the form of a belt drive with the driving belt run over two tandem arranged spaced-apart rollers. The rotational axis about which the cutter knife 16 is rotatable is in that case the pivot of the roller which is in transport direction T the foremost roller .
(0032) A modification of the invention provides for the transport rollers to be of compressed air operated type .

Claims (12)

Claims 1. Apparatus for peeling peeled goods, with a number of transport units for transporting the peeled goods in a conveying direction and with a number of cutting units for peeling the peeled goods, wherein the transport units and the cutting units are arranged alternately in the transport direction, the conveying unit comprises at least two conveying rollers, to which the peeling material abuts and is guided in the conveying direction, wherein at least one conveying roller is coupled to a drive unit for rotating the conveying roller about a rotation axis running perpendicular to the conveying direction, - the conveying roller are mounted so as to be movable laterally to the conveying direction and transversely to the axis of rotation, so that a leveling movement after the conveying roller is possible, depending on the thickness of the peeling material, Hey The peeling material can be transported, extend, characterized in that the cutting blades (16) are each arranged for a single transport roller (15), the cutting blades (16) being rotatable in each case about a rotation axis (D1, D2) of the assigned transport roller.

Device according to one or more of claims 1 to 7, characterized in that two shell modules (1,2,3,4) are coupled by means of a coupling unit (10) to a single drive unit (11) for forming a module pair ( 8,9), wherein the peeling module (1,2, -3,4) of the peeling module pair (8,9) is offset by a 90 degree angle until each other is arranged.
